This is right up there with the Joy of Cooking for me as being one of the essential cookbooks I own. In addition to learning more about Jewish cooking, it has also sparked my interest in Ethiopian cooking in general after trying out some of the Ethiopian recipes included in the book. I also was fascinated to learn that the origin of empanadas (which my family makes all the time) is actually Persian and Iraqi, known as sambuzaks. Now I use the sambuzak dough recipe for my empanadas! This books holds tons of little historical lessons about food that are really wonderful to read. The recipes themselves are fantastic. I highly recommend this book!
A Comprehensive and Beautiful Treasury of Jewish Cooking
There is a whole world of Jewish cooking beyond chopped liver and gefilte fish. Scattered across the globe, there are many distinctive, delicious, and authentic Jewish cuisines to be savored. Gil Marks, a rabbi, gourmet chef, and authority on Jewish food history and lore, guides us through this largely undiscovered world. He delights and enlightens with traditional recipes from Italian, Yemenite, Ethiopian, Indian, Eastern European, German, Hungarian, Georgian, Alsatian, and Middle Eastern Jewry; culinary conversations with contemporary members of these ancient and medieval communities; and fascinating commentary on Jewish food and Jewish history.
The World of Jewish Cooking offers an astonishing array of delicacies, including: Pastilla (Moroccan “Pigeon” Pie) * Kik Wot (Ethiopian Split Peas Stew) * Muez con Almendrada (Moroccan Almond-Walnut Confection) * Khachapuri (Georgian Cheese Bread) * Yakhnat (Persian Lamb Stew) * Murgi Kari (Calcutta Chicken Curry) * Meggy Leves (Hungarian Cherry Soup) * Testine di Spinaci (Italian Spinach Stalks) * Hraimeh (Northwest African Red Fish) * Kubba (Iraqi Stuffed Dumplings) * Marunchinos (Sephardic Almond Macaroons)
Rabbi Marks explains how the Jews, spreading to all corners of the world beginning with the Diaspora, adapted their recipes to local ingredients and adopted the local fare, often giving it new twists. A historian and a chef, he provides a clear explanation of what makes a dish Jewish and why so many Americans associate Jewish cooking with Eastern European food. You don’t have to be Jewish to enjoy the more than 500 recipes Marks includes. A wealth of historical and culinary information, as well as photos and drawings, accompany the recipes.

Dieting and Weight loss is a huge industry worth billions of dollars each year. Thousands of programs and machines are on offer with promises of losing inches, reduction in clothes size or shedding of kilos.
Weight loss is often viewed as a phase we move through, we live our lifestyles as normal, gain weight then change our lifestyle periodically as required for health reasons or to lose excess weight. Once we reach our desired weight we return to our old lifestyle habits and begin to eat with our old mindset.
Of course this isn’t always the case. Many people lose weight and enjoy their renewed freedom, health and lifestyle. These people have something in common that makes them different to the average person who goes on a diet.
Some of the reasons dieting does not work long term:
Dieting requires an immediate change in the food we consume and an increase in exercise. When we have an immediate change in a regular pattern, it becomes exciting for a day or even a week, then when the excitement wears off we gradually move back to old habits.
Despite what we hear on Television or in Magazines, Losing weight is not about eating certain foods for a given number of days or eating only meat or only cabbage. The body requires a broad spectrum of nutrients to sustain full function of all body organs.
Changing the food we eat will not have a great deal of change on your weight without an increase in physical exercise. The same applies if we increase exercise in an attempt to lose weight but fail to change our eating habits in the process.
Diet product manufacturers want you to keep going back to lose more weight. It makes good business sense not focusing 100% on the biggest way you can keep weight off after losing it. Dieting focuses on processes required to reduce weight
The Misguided belief that losing weight has a start and an end date. Weight loss starts with the decision to improve your health and lifestyle. Dieting focuses only on the act of losing weight.
I read a lot of articles online that focus on dieting and not on nutrition. I rarely find information that focuses on lifestyle changes geared at improving health. Lifestyle changes require a commitment to improving our health. Rather than focusing on losing weight we need to focus improving our health through lifestyle changes.
Start slow. Replace unhealthy foods for healthy versions. Reduce portion size and increase your physical activity. Increase Antioxidant rich foods or supplement if required to assist in eliminating toxins. The important thing to remember is there is no end date to healthy lifestyle improvements. Weight loss is a byproduct of improved nutrition intake and increased physical activity.
Be passionate about your decision to improve your health. Get excited by a bowl full of salad and angry at the fat dripping off a pizza. It’s a change in mindset that will shed the kilos not a demanding diet structure.

MENSTRUAL CYCLE
Period pains and cramps:
Follow these simple guidelines for cosseting yourself and reducing stress both before and during your period.
* Eat light, easily digestible food: Home-made chicken soup, fish, eggs, soaked almonds, fresh carrot and apple juice pomegranate, green vegetables, salad, potatoes, rice and pasta.
* Take a warm shower or bath once or twice daily.
*Drink plenty of fluid:
two litres of still water daily, but avoid very cold drinks. Also, consume relaxing herbal teas; for example, fennel, mint or basil (try infusing fresh leaves, straining and drinking with honey), as well as malty drinks.
* Relax and breathe:
Tension of any kind exacerbates symptoms, so rest whenever you can and keep calm. Every couple of hours, spend a minute or two breathing slowly and deeply. Breathe in, swelling your abdomen, taking three seconds; hold your breath for three seconds, and then exhale for six, gently sucking in your abdomen. Repeat ten times.
*Ease cramps by massaging the area just above the pubic bone, using soothing peppermint balm, tiger balm or simply olive or sesame oil. Massage gently, and then increase the pressure slightly to relieve the sore tendons in the area.
* Try the following homoeopathic remedies: Suck two tablets of pulsatilla 30, three times a day, starting two days before your period is due and continuing for the first two days of your cycle. Do this for three or four cycles in order to get results. Or suck two tablets of belladonna 30, every two hours while the cramps continue.
Unexpected pains:
If you suddenly begin to experience period pains for the first time, it may be a symptom of an infection of the womb lining, or an irritation caused by an IUD. Consult your GP or family-planning clinic immediately.
Premenstrual syndrome (PMS):
Up to 75 per cent of women experience a cluster of symptoms, which strikes in the second half of the menstrual cycle and disappears when the period begins. At least 150 symptoms have been recorded; for some women they are primarily physical, while for others they can mean unpredictable and uncharacteristic behaviour. The fact that PMS disappears if the ovaries are surgically removed supports the hypothesis that the root cause is ovarian function. Common symptoms are:
* Mood swings
* Irritability
*Tearfulness
* Loss of libido
* Memory loss
* Sleep disturbances
* Chronic fatigue
* Clumsiness
* Water retention/bloating
* Dizziness
* Headaches
* Breast tenderness
* Pelvic pain
My personal view is that damage control and preventive measures go a long way towards mitigating the effects of PMS. As well as following the suggestions above for cosseting yourself, I recommend the following:
Neck and Shoulder massage:
Of all the treatments I recommend, this is the most beneficial. I believe that before a period begins the blood ‘depot’ shifts to the pelvic region an causes congestion, which reduces the brain’s supply of blood and thus the oxygen and glucose it needs. Ask your partner to massage your neck and shoulders once a day for ten to 15 minutes if the PMS is severe, and if possible, see a professional at least once.
Food:
I usually recommend a fairly restricted diet during the time that you get PMS. Be as easy on your digestive system as possible; the better your body in general feels. I suggest you avoid fried food and citrus fruit (for indigestion), excess salt (for water retention and nervous agitation), mushrooms, cheese and yeast products (for bloating and fatigue), ginger (for nervous agitation), coffee and alcohol (for tension/irritability) and sugary foods (for cravings). Also avoid canned and preserved foods, which are often high in salt, sugar and additives and which may affect your mood.
Yoga:
Regular sessions of therapeutic iyengar yoga can be a big help, and try listening to a relaxation tape/CD before going to sleep.
Supplements:
Take a B-complex vitamin daily for its anti-stress effect; and drink Gokhru tea for water retention.

What are the healthiest foods I can eat? My kids ask this all the time, shrug and eat more Goldfish crackers. Knowing what are the healthiest foods is only half the battle – you actually have to eat them to be aided by their nutrition. I was once told “you don’t need acne medicine if you’re not washing your face very well anyway”.
So let’s get into the healthiest foods – the super foods as some have called them. These super foods are probably not everything, in fact, there’s probably a super duper food out there that we don’t know about. Some Aborigine in the middle of Australia is eating it right now. These are the Super Foods you can find in your grocery store, are easy on the eyes and stomach.
Time Magazine once listed these as their healthiest foods: tomato, oats, broccoli, salmon, spinach, nuts, blueberries, garlic, red wine, and green tea. For the most part a lot of these foods show up on every super foods list – with some exceptions. This is a list of Oprah’s Super Foods and some Michio Kuchio, the founder of Macrobiotics, recommends:
* red wine, water, and green tea
* avocado, broccoli, onions, peppers, soy, spinach, and sprouts, hot peppers, leeks, daikon radishes
* acai berry, apples, blueberries, pomegranates, pumpkin, kiwi, oranges,and tomatoes
* wild salmon, turkey, eggs
* beans, barley, seeds, nuts, lentils, oats, walnuts and buckwheat
* cinnamon, dark chocolates, garlic, honey, extra virgin olive oil (“cold pressed”), sea salt, yogurt & kefir
* sea vegetables, irish moss, umeboshi plums, wheat grass, miso
So what does that leave us? Brewer’s Yeast is probably the best food out there, but it’s not real palatable. It’s a powder like flax seed or a fiber supplement and it doesn’t taste too good. But it’s packed with nutrients almost light years ahead of the rest.
